Hot on the heels of last year’s critically acclaimed self-titled
album, The Sideshow Tragedy is back with another release, the Gasoline
EP. Recorded in 8 hours to 2-inch tape and set for release as a
limited run of 300 hand-numbered 7-inch vinyl records, the 4-song EP
is the Austin, TX duo’s rawest, bluesiest, dirtiest offering to date.
The Gasoline EP marks a new beginning for The Sideshow Tragedy in many
ways; after months on the road touring behind 2010?s The Sideshow
Tragedy(which made Austin Chronicle’s Texas year-end best list, among
other accolades), founding members Nathan Singleton(vocals, guitar)
and Jeremy Harrell(drums) decided to strip all the fat from their
sound and do their version of a 2-piece punk/blues/rock band–no bass,
no backup vocals, no extra sound. The result is Gasoline, a rough,
elemental, groovy, dirty slab of rock and roll. Recorded at Austin’s
Big Orange studio by T-Bird & The Breaks’ Sam Patlove, the EP finds
the duo mining territory that their three previous efforts have only
hinted at–straight-up blues, soul, lo-fi punk rock–making it
simultaneously their edgiest, most contemporary and most traditional
release to date.
After independently pressing and releasing multiple CD runs of their
previous albums, The band felt like doing something different this
time around. “Most people feel like music is a disposable commodity
that should be free, and maybe they’re right,” says Nathan. “At the
same time, we feel like what we’re doing isn’t disposable, that’s it’s
worth something. So doing a really limited run of the EP on vinyl is
our answer to that–it’s a collectible, physical record of our art,
made with love for those who value that kind of thing.” The limited
edition record will include a free mp3 download of the entire album,
and the EP will be for sale digitally as well.
Gasoline is a new beginning for The Sideshow Tragedy, and it is only
the beginning; the band is already at work on material for their next
album, and will tour extensively throughout 2011, bringing their rock
and roll party to towns far and wide…join the party.
