Major Bacon Band

Major Bacon is the brainchild of leader Dave Renson who, as a child, noticed an old desk placard reading “Major Bacon”—the name of his maternal grandfather, World War I army major who passed away before Dave’s birth. As the years went by and Dave mastered the guitar, he always knew that he would front his own band bearing that name.

In the 1980s, the first incarnation of Major Bacon performed several shows in and around New Orleans. After those initial gigs, the project was sidelined as Dave played guitar and slide with other bands such as Pat Ramsey & The Blues Disciples, Timothea, JD & The Jammers, and the Bourbon Cowboys.

After the devastating death of Pat Ramsey in 2008, Dave decided it was time for him to finally pursue his own vision by bringing Major Bacon to center stage. Dave knew bassist Eloise Davis from Pat Ramsey & The Blues Disciples, and the two of them began their search for a drummer.

They found what they were looking for in Bill Hjortsberg. A recent Georgia transplant, Bill knew Eloise from playing around New Orleans. His sense of time, precise touch, and Southern rock background blended perfectly with Dave and Eloise.

If you’ve never felt this vibe, get to a Major Bacon show so you, too, can savor the intoxicating elixir of this band’s amazing musical spell. And don’t forget to feed the pig at the next gig!
